Le religieux américain, âgé de 61 ans, dirigera les quelque 15’000 franciscains répartis dans 113 pays du monde.

Le Père Michael Perry avait été élu le 22 mai 2013 à titre provisoire, succédant au P. José Rodríguez Carballo que le pape François avait appelé à la Congrégation pour les Instituts de vie consacrée.

Né à Indianapolis, aux Etats-Unis en 1954, le Père Michael était auparavant vicaire général et procureur de l’ordre. Il a été ministre provincial de la province du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus (USA). Il a également été missionnaire en République démocratique du Congo pendant dix ans. Il a travaillé en outre pour le Catholic Relief Service (CRS, Caritas) et la Conférence des évêques catholiques des Etats-Unis. Il est titulaire d’un doctorat en anthropologie théologique. Entré chez les franciscains en 1977, a été ordonné prêtre en 1984. Il est le troisième Américain appelé à ces fonctions. (apic/com/mp)
