BISHOP IVO GUGIC MURDERED

The retired bishop of Kotor, a well-known collector of artworks and patron

of the arts, resisted thieves who strangled him with a wire.

Kotor, June 4, 1996 (IKA) ? Msgr. Ivo Gugif, retired bishop of Kotor, was

found strangled last night, June 3, 1996, at the bishop’s residence in

Kotor. According to a statement by the apostolic nunciate in the Socialist

Republic of Yugoslavia, Belgrade, the dead body was found at 7:10 p.m. The

initial results of the police investigation indicate that the murder

occurred at approximately 5 p.m. It appears to be a case of murder with

robbery. The thieves broke into the bishop’s residence wher e many

artworks are kept, that can be considered a genuine museum. Bishop Gugif

resisted the intruders and they strangled him with a thick wire. There are

reports that the perpetrators of this cruel murder are already in police

hands. ?There will be a funeral procession on June 7 at 9:30 a.m., in which

many bishops, priests, monks, nuns and the believers will participate. It

is anticipated that all Catholic bishops from the territory of Serbia and

Montenegro will attend: from Belgrade, Subotica, Zrenjanin, Prizren and

Bar. In Dubrovnik, the bishop’s body will be exhibited in the Church of St.

Michael on the island of Lapad from 2 to 4 p.m. after which a requiem mass

and the burial will be conducted. ?Bishop Ivo Gugif was born in Vela Luka

on the island of Kor ula on March 2, 1920. He was ordained to the

priesthood in 1944 in Dubrovnik, where he was a teacher of religion and

administrator of the parish of Sv. Mihailj on the island of Lapad. On

August 13, 1961, he was ordained as a bishop and served as the auxiliary

bishop of Dubrovnik. In 1967, he was appointed as the auxiliary bishop of

Split-Makarska with the see in Trogir. In 1983, he was appointed bishop of

Kotor, remaining in this position until April 1996 when the new bishop of

Kotor, Msgr. Ilija Janjif, was appointed. (d06020hr/sf)
